Cuts like a knife...or something like that

At the request of our friend, Carlos, we are going to do a little rundown of the knives Jesse uses and how he uses them.  While he does own a few 'designer' knives he does end up using the ones he had to purchase for culinary school most of the time which are shown in the picture above.

Top left - Slicer: Used for slicing meat.  It's length allows for longer strokes, more control and cleaner cuts.  It also has depressions down the sides of the blade which reduce friction resulting in a smoother cut.

Second down on left - Bread Slicer: Obviously used for slicing bread, its length and serrated edge makes it great for slicing bread without crushing it.

Third down on left - 8" Chef's Knife: Jesse uses this for pretty much everything else.  Chopping, slicing, dicing, etc.  It's really Jesse's "go to" all purpose knife.

Bottom left - 8" Santoku: Similar to a Chef's knife but has depressions like the Slicer for smoother cuts and a blunt edge.  This means the cuts must be less in a rocking motion like the chefs knife and more in a repeated down and forward motion.

Right blade facing down - Boning Knife: For fileting fish.  We don't use this knife often.

Right facing up - Paring Knife: Used for smaller kitchen tasks.  Jesse rarely uses this but I do all the time.  It's great for prepping fruits and vegetables and growing up we didn't have fancy knives so I have pretty much learned how to use it for everything much to Jesse's chagrin.  He typically uses the Chef's knife to do these tasks.

I asked Jesse that if he were to suggest one knife that everyone should have on hand.  His response was the 8" Chef's knife stating that, "you could get through anything with that."  As far as brands go, if you're looking for something expensive there are plenty at Williams Sonoma to choose from but he has really enjoyed the Mercer's he was issued for school.

Kitchen Update - Round 1

Now, obviously since we're starting our food truck, Grind in the Spring and doing Kickstarter to get it ready we're not really in a position to keep updating the house as rapidly or as costly as we were this time last year.  When we realized we were going to have to wait to remodel the kitchen I was inspired by this post from the blog Young House Love about painting your cabinets as a low cost way to update a kitchen without spending a lot of money.  Now I know this is not revolutionary information, but I was convinced that our nasty 1954 cabinets were far too disgusting to even bother trying to do this but when I realized it would be at least another year before we could replace them I figured they really couldn't get any worse with a couple coats of paint.  I mean, look at this...

The picture from the realtor listing

Now look at this!

I mean, so much better, right?  And the best part?  We used paint we already had.  I know, more craziness.  This entire project cost me $25.  I already had the primer and 1 bucket of the paint from the living room.  One more bucket of paint and it covered all of it.  That's one coat of primer and two coats of paint on both the inside and outside of the cabinets as well as the bottoms and tops of the shelves.  I even used a color we already had to accent the insides of the cabinets from where we removed the doors.

We used Glidden Gripper to prime, Glidden Silver Birch as the main color and Glidden Olivewood for the accent.  We completed it over the course of 2 weeks with the majority of it being done over 1 weekend.  It took forever to get all the cabinet doors and shelves done because you have to wait for both sides to be completely dry before flipping but I think all the effort was totally worth it.  Since we don't want to invest on replacing the back splash right now we have this master to plan to coat it in industrial floor paint to give a thick shiny texture.  In our heads it sounds great but as of right now we have no idea how to do it.  See below for more pictures of the before, during and after.

So much stuff...geez

Busy, busy

and more primer
So much brighter!

Love the stainless against the white

Redone cabinets meant we could clean off and organize our kitchen rack

The sellers had already replaced the hardware so that saved us even more money

Grind Updates and Kitchen Remodel

So our kitchen was pretty busted when we moved in. We removed some cabinet doors and added a stainless steel table to make it a little easier to cook in but it still just wasn't cutting it. Jesse had to go out of town for work a couple weekends ago so I got crazy with some paint we had here in the house and painting the cabinets. They're completed but I need to to a little touch-ups before I take pictures so I'll hopefully get those up this weekend. Trust that is looks awesome. Like, really awesome.

In Grind news, we're making some serious progress on our Kickstarter progress and have gotten a lot of amazing press. We've even booked a couple events for this summer and we're not even open yet! I don't want to announce until everything is confirmed but seriously, this sh*t is getting awesome. Good things is, since most things are on holidays or weekends we'll both be able to keep our jobs and pursue this craziness we've taken on! We'll be busy but it will be worth it. Let's hear it for hard work. In light of hard work I leave you with a little Daft Punk to tide you over until those awesome kitchen pics this weekend.

What. A. Mess.

Before
Living like college kids.  Very poor college kids.

Hello, telephone wall-hole thing.  Hello, light fixture I hit so hard with my head you cracked.

After

The Remains

The other half was in Jesse's chest hair and my lungs.

Poor corner cabinet.  You were dirty and gross.
